Cantonments

Cantonments is the most exclusive corner of Accra. Planned in the 1920s as a low-density district for senior colonial officials, it has kept its spacious, ordered character ever since: wide plots, mature trees, generous setbacks and strict building codes give the streets a quiet grandeur unmatched elsewhere in the city. Over the decades it has become the capital's diplomatic heart, home to more than 40 embassies and high commissions, whose presence brings police patrols, private security and a sense of calm and safety that defines daily life here. That security, combined with proximity to everything that matters, is the area's draw. The Ghana International School and other leading schools are minutes away, private hospitals meet international standards, and the restaurants and nightlife of Labone and Osu are a short drive south. Housing runs to large luxury villas, gated townhouses and high-end serviced apartments, and with so little developable land remaining, supply stays tight against persistent demand from diplomats, executives and old-money Ghanaian families. Cantonments is, quite simply, the address other Accra neighbourhoods measure themselves against.
