Ottensen consistently tops the lists of where Hamburgers most want to live, and it is easy to see why. Once an industrial corner of Altona, the quarter reinvented itself around its old factory halls, the Zeisehallen, with their cinema and studios, are the emblem, into a dense, creative and intensely walkable neighbourhood. The pedestrianised Ottenser Hauptstrasse is the spine, lined with bistros, design shops and the kind of café terraces that fill from morning to night. The Spritzenplatz hosts a weekly market and a constant churn of neighbourhood life, while traffic-calming has made the side streets safe, quiet and full of children. The Elbe beaches and the Altonaer Balkon are a few minutes' walk south. For investors, Ottensen offers some of Hamburg's most durable rental demand.
