About Altstadt

Altstadt is Zurich's medieval Old Town, split into Niederdorf (east bank) and Lindenhof (west bank) by the Limmat river. The neighborhood combines cobblestoned medieval streets, the highest-end retail (Bahnhofstrasse), Switzerland's most exclusive private banks, and proximity to Lake Zurich. Building height and conservation rules limit any new construction, sustaining Switzerland's most premium pricing. Residential prices run CHF 22,000-32,000 per square metre, among Europe's highest, with gross yields of 2.0-2.8%. The market is heavily restricted for non-resident foreigners under Lex Koller. EU/EFTA buyers with Swiss permits can purchase, but availability is severely limited. Lifestyle is refined and walkable: Bahnhofstrasse luxury shopping, Lake Zurich on the doorstep, world-class restaurants, and the Tonhalle concert hall. Excellent transit via Hauptbahnhof.
